VATER / VACTERLS Association

VATER / VACTERLS association is a nonrandom association of birth defects that affects multiple organ systems. The term VATER / VACTERLS is an acronym with each letter representing the first letter of one or more of the common findings in affected children:

V = vertebral anomalies
A = anal atresia
C = cardiac (heart) defects
T = tracheo-esophageal fistula
E = esophageal atresia
R = renal (kidney) anomalies
L = limb anomalies
S = single umbilical artery

Born on February 5, 2006, Jordyn Hope weighed in at 4lbs. 5oz. not too bad for being a couple of weeks early, however , things got worse. Jordyn suffers from VATER Association, in the first few days of her life she had two major surgeries, and more are yet to come. Jordyn was born into an amazing family, her parents are no strangers to hospitals. Just a few days after she was conceived her dad suffered a brain hemorrhage, stroke, and seizure; this was due to an AVM in his brain. Things were touch and go for a while and after several surgeries her Daddy is beginning to make a miraculous recovery, however still unable to work.

During the pregnancy Jordyn’s Mommy found out about the heart defects her soon-to-be-born baby would have and with strength and faith she was able to prepare herself and her family both mentally and emotionally for what would come. However, all the preparing in the world could not get them ready for the emotional rollercoaster that would lie ahead. It was not known until after the emergency cesarean section at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania what birth defects this precious little baby would have……moments after delivery Jordyn was raced over to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where they were able to diagnose her with VATER Association.

Jordyn’s anomalies include: cardiac, anal atresia, tracheo-esophageal fistula/atresia, tethered spinal cord, and single umbilical artery, as of yet there have not been any other findings. The road ahead is a tough one, throughout Jordyn’s surgeries both Mom and Dad will temporarily relocate to The Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia, in order to be close to their newborn baby. Unable to work, both Mom and Dad are trying their best to keep their lives together, right now there is nothing more important in this world than their beautiful ray of hope, Jordyn Hope!

Along with relatives and friends we ask you to please help out this amazing and inspirational family by making a donation from the heart……all contributions will be placed into trust account for them to use in order to keep their lives intact. A portion of all donations will be given to The Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!
